Yellowsnake Horses Brazos River Ranch is the realization of the dream that legendary outfitter and trail guide James (Yellowsnake) McDonald and his daughter Rhonda McDonald Siver had to share this piece of Texas paradise with the world. After his passing, Rhonda continued his legacy of horsemanship and love of trail riding and officially opened the ranch to the public in May of 2024.

The land around Yellowsnake Horses Brazos River Ranch has been in our family since the end of the Civil War when our ancestors moved here and operated a ferry known as Brannon's Crossing that pulled settlers heading west across the Brazos river until 1906 when the Brannon Bridge, a single lane suspension bridge, was completed and later collapsed in 1934.
James “Yellowsnake“ McDonald was an incredible helicopter pilot. He owned his own helicopter, a 1942 Bell helicopter like the one on MASH. The tail rotor from that helicopter hangs over the tack room.
He mostly crop-dusted with it from the late 1960s through the early eighties. He had a horrific accident in December 1984 that grounded him from flying. Almost unbelievable, after a life of dangerous flying, he was sitting in the helicopter on the helipad of a tuna boat with blades still turning when a person running a crane ran the cable into the path of the blades, killing his copilot and nearly killing him. His injuries included a broken neck and back as well as massive head trauma that left him in a coma.
He was known throughout the helicopter business as a legend. That life was ripped away and he had to recover and reinvent himself. That’s not easy to do for someone who had created a reputation as a hot shot helicopter pilot.
His therapy was horses, he moved to Arizona and soon gained legendary status as Yellowsnake, the outfitter and trail guide until his wife became ill and passed away in 2019.
It was about that time that Rhonda inherited the family farm from her great aunt and convinced him to move back to Texas to the family's property. It was his vision, horses and gear that turned an old homestead farm into a fully functioning ranch. He was known as almost exclusively as Yellowsnake and Rhonda felt it appropriate to name her trail-riding business in his honor after his passing.
Heading west from Weatherford on I-20, take the Millsap exit 394. Head west on the service road and turn onto Brannon Bridge Circle. You will be headed south. Stay on Brannon Bridge Circle and DO NOT TURN ON GRINDSTONE RD. There will be a sharp right turn, and just a little farther, there will be a sharp left turn onto Strickland Lane and it will bring you down to Meeks Bend, where you can only turn right. Take the gravel road on the left.
